Polypropylene (PP) is a low-density, stress-resistant thermoplastic made from a propene (or propylene) monomer. The chemical formula for this linear hydrocarbon resin is (C3H6)n. It was discovered in the mid-1950s by Italian scientists and is today the second most manufactured plastic after polyethylene.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic material and as such, it can be heated to its melting point, chilled, and then reheated again without any significant deterioration. This property, together with its ability to liquefy instead of burn when subjected to high temperatures, are two critical attributes that make polypropylene a popular choice for manufacturing applications such as injection molding.
"The world is going to hell not in a hand basket, but in one of those ubiquitous, un-recyclable reconstituted branded plastic shopping bags that look like cloth. Our kitchen cupboard and hall closets are full of them. We hate them. They offer false hopes of a greener planet when in fact they are far worse for it than the plastic bags they were intended to replace.
It’s easy to get cynical about such things. Laszlo Szabo employs the hateful bags to make political and social commentaries mashed up with clever wordplay and black humour.
Just as Picasso used newsprint headlines in his early collage works to transmit concrete political meanings, Laszlo fucks with corporate-branded packaging – the material closest at hand – to make us look and think twice."
